SLAYER combat rewards short reads: recognize an attack, choose block, parry or movement, confirm a starter, spend the right resource, and exit before the opponent recovers. The tutorial currently emphasizes timed blocking, aerial routes and guardbreaks. Breathing Styles and Blood Demon Arts add specialized tools, but the basic loop decides whether those moves land safely.

Quick practice loop: hold block to learn the complete string, attempt a parry on one predictable hit, punish with a short confirmed sequence, then dash back to neutral. Add uppercut, downslam, guardbreak and ability moves one at a time.

Combos

Practice uppercut, downslam, guardbreak, aerial confirmation and resets without assuming a long string is guaranteed.

Neutral: earn the first hit

Movement and information come before a combo. Use dash to change spacing, keep the target visible and watch whether they hold block, swing immediately or wait for your approach. A move with forward travel is not automatically a safe opener; it can be parried or punished when thrown from a predictable distance.

Start with the shortest reliable action. If it lands, confirm into the next step. If it is blocked, choose guard pressure or disengage. If it misses, recover instead of queuing a second committed move.

Block and parry

On PC, current walkthroughs show F for block and timed parry. Hold block first so you can observe the number of hits and delays. Then choose one clear hit and press at impact. Multi-hit strings can punish a parry attempt that only answers the first beat.

Latency changes the useful input timing. Practice in the server you will actually play. A successful parry creates an opportunity, not an unlimited turn; use a short punish until you have measured the opponent’s recovery. The Parry guide provides a timing and troubleshooting method.

Uppercut, downslam and air state

The current PC tutorial route uses Ctrl + M1 for uppercut and Space + M1 after the launch for downslam. The first action changes the target to an airborne state; the second depends on that state and your alignment.

Confirm the grounded hit before uppercut. Follow the target, then input the slam while the air window is active. If it fails, diagnose timing and alignment rather than mashing. Ability moves that launch or knock back should be tested with the same state-aware method.

Guardbreak and pressure

Public guides show R as the direct guardbreak input, while sustained attacks can also pressure guard. Use the direct option when the opponent is visibly blocking. A guardbreak thrown at a moving target can miss and expose you.

Styles and arts also contain documented guardbreaks. Their range and windup differ, so choose the one that fits the current position. Do not spend a high-value resource when the basic option already solves the guard.

Breathing and Blood resources

Breathing moves use a bar refilled with E on the current PC route. Demon actions interact with a Blood bar and Blood Level. Keep resource progression and combat resource separate. A move can be unlocked but unavailable because the bar is empty, or the bar can be full while a node remains locked.

Refill only during a safe pause. The opponent can punish a stationary resource action. Save enough for either a confirmed finisher or a movement/defensive option rather than spending everything on the first opening.

Severance and passive layers

Severance is chosen during character creation and can be rerolled. The current card describes Burst as converting Prowess into raw damage, while Limb Severance converts it into Blood damage that weakens demon recovery as the bar drains. Choose according to target and fight length, then test with the same Prowess setup.

General Perks, clan passives, Breathing perks, Demon perks and art perks are separate layers. Test the base route first. Add one passive and repeat. A build with several changing effects makes it impossible to know why a combo improved.

A practical training session

Spend five minutes on movement and block, five on one parry cue, five on uppercut/downslam, and five on a guarded target. Finish with one style or art move used only after a confirmed opening. This is more useful than repeating a long dummy string that never faces defense.

Record starter, defensive answer, confirmed follow-up, ending position and failure. If the same failure repeats, change one step. Server updates may alter timing, so a short record remains useful after balance changes.

Common mistakes

  • Mashing through a blocked string without watching the guard state.
  • Attempting parry on every hit before learning the full sequence.
  • Using uppercut when the grounded starter did not confirm.
  • Treating hyper armor as invulnerability.
  • Spending all Breathing or Blood resources with no exit.
  • Comparing perked and unperked routes as if only the move changed.

Sources and confidence

Controls and tutorial sequence are corroborated by a detailed October 19, 2026 public-test walkthrough. Severance and perk roles come from the identity-linked SLAYER Trello checked October 28. Frame data, true combo gaps, damage, cooldowns and controller glyphs require live testing.
