Severance is chosen during SLAYER character creation and can be rerolled. The current public card documents two types: Burst, where Prowess converts to raw skill damage, and Limb Severance, where Prowess converts to Blood damage against demons. The choice changes what your successful skills are trying to accomplish.
Burst
Burst is documented for short, concentrated damage. The card describes chaining skills, cutting through health and finishing before the target recovers. It is the simpler option to evaluate against targets whose normal health is the main problem.
Test Burst with the same Prowess, move, target and perk setup. Record direct damage and whether any Blood-bar change still occurs from the base move. Do not assume “raw damage” means every skill scales identically.
Limb Severance
Limb Severance converts Prowess into Blood damage according to the card. Each landed skill drains a demon’s Blood bar, limbs can be lost as it falls, and depleted Blood reduces the demon’s ability to heal. The description favors longer pressure and demon matchups.
Track Blood separately from health. A route may show less immediate health damage while creating a stronger late-fight state. Count connected skills, visible Blood change, limb state and recovery behavior.
Choose by target and fight length
Use Burst when a short health-damage window decides the exchange and the target does not rely on Demon Blood recovery. Consider Limb Severance when the enemy is a demon, the fight lasts long enough to drain Blood, and limiting healing or limb function has practical value.
Neither is universally best. A short activity can end before Limb pressure matters; a durable Demon target can reduce the value of pure burst if it repeatedly heals. The live objective and opponent type should decide.
Prowess and training
Training Points documentation lists Focus Training and Slicing as Prowess sources for Slayer characters, with Focus Training also present for Demons. Keep the Prowess value constant when comparing Severance. A changed training setup can make one result appear stronger even if the Severance effect is unchanged.
Use Training Points for caps and reset items. Do not spend a reset solely to imitate a build without understanding the current limit.
How to test the choice
Pick one Demon target and one repeatable skill. Record Prowess, clan, perks, level, target health and Blood before the hit. Repeat several times with the same conditions. If you reroll Severance, reproduce the setup and compare health damage, Blood damage, limb outcome and time to the same combat state.
One clip is not enough. Criticals, server boosts, perks and target state can change the result. Use a small repeatable sample and preserve the live tooltip.
Reroll safely
The card says Severance can be rerolled, but the current menu path, cost, pity and whether rerolling affects another choice need in-game confirmation. Record the existing type and available resources before pressing. Set a stop rule based on your target route.
Do not confuse Severance rerolls with Clan, Breathing or Demon Art rerolls from codes. Confirm the label and counter in the live interface.
Common mistakes
- Comparing Burst and Limb on different Prowess or perk setups.
- Looking only at health and ignoring the Demon Blood bar.
- Choosing Limb for a short non-demon activity where its condition cannot matter.
- Choosing Burst from a single critical hit.
- Rerolling without knowing the current cost or recovery path.
Use both targets in a decision test
Test the selected Severance on one Demon and one target whose Blood system does not drive the encounter. Keep the same Prowess and use the same short skill route. Burst should be judged by repeatable health pressure, while Limb Severance should be judged by Blood depletion, limb state and reduced recovery over time. This two-target comparison prevents a matchup-specific result from becoming a universal recommendation. It also exposes whether the current live build limits Limb effects to particular Demon targets or activities.
Sources and confidence
The two types and their broad conversion roles are community reported from the SLAYER public Trello Severance card, last activity observed October 26, 2026. Exact scaling, Blood thresholds, limb rules, eligible targets and reroll details require live verification.
